Florida is the only southern state that really matters.

Actually, I am not aware of any Democrat who has won the Presidency without carrying at least two Southern States (defining the South to include FL, GA, NC, SC, VA, TN, MS, AL).

Clinton in 96 won FL and TN, as well as all three borderline Southern States (KY, AR, and LA).

Clinton in 92 won GA and TN, as well as all three borderline Southern States (KY, AR, LA)

Gore would have been the first to lose the entire South, including the border states, and win by carrying only Florida.

So IMO the trend of the Democrats' declining strength across the South makes it extremely difficult for them to win the Presidency regardless of who their candidate is. The KY and MS elections yesterday further indicate that the GOP is gaining, not losing, strength in the South. Neither of those states had a Republican governor, in one case not in the past 30 years. Now they do.
