yes on this you are correct. California has some great moderate republicans who have been completely trashed by this nutty far right group in charge. Tom Campbell, for one. That guy should have been a gubernatorial candidate.

Having said this, some of out democrats like Dianne Feinstein act and vote in a very similar fashion to a moderate republican agenda. The George Bush thread here on SI is always trashing Dianne, it is because shes good. They don't go after Boxer who is a Davis-style "lesser of two evils" winner.

Arnold won on pizazz and because he was up against a candidate whom the GOP had basically assassinated who had no pizazz. (Enron and the GOP spent 7 million in 2000 sliming Davis, handled by RNC head Ed Gillespie, Enron's chief operative)

If Bush were judged by his deficit and energy price performance by the same standards he'd be completely unelectable. Arnold's views dont even have anything to do with GOP views. He's not fighting a movement to lower the car tax and just appointed a liberal state EPA chairman against the wishes of the GOP. So far so good. He's also pro gay, pro abortion rights, pro marijuana decriminization and anti Big Oil. Arnold has a few GOP stripes on his back but he spends more time asking advice of the Kennedys than he does anyone from the GOP. That made him pallatable to the California democratic majority. Also, Bustamante was a terrible candidate. Arnold had perfect timing.

arnold schwarzenegger is demonstrative of just how pathetic the republican party has become. republicans don't care about principles, they only care about gaining power at any cost, no matter how much they have to compromise. just look at the stars of the republican party in recent years. colin powell, rudy giuliani, bloomberg, arnold, etc. they are ALL a bunch of filthy liberals calling themselves republicans. pro-abortion, pro-homo, pro-affirmative action, etc.

many democrats a generation ago were more conservative than the current crop of republican stars.
