They no longer espouse or stand for the same values as the majority of the people in the region. The Northern Liberal's view of the south is that every white man down there has a white hood in the closet. Remember, the Republicans took over the white southern vote when Johnson passed the "Great Society" and the "Voting Rights Act." It was a complete racial "flip flop" between parties. So it is easy for the Democrats to score the Southern Republicans as "Racist." In the 60s, they were. And it is easy for the Republicans to score the Northern Democrats as "out of touch." They are.
