The UN had unfinished business that could have been used in time to justify any necessary action -- we should have remained part of that process but chose to go outside of it instead.

GST, we now have the Iraqi intelligence papers that prove that French and Russian diplomats were promising Saddam that they would prevent any UN-approved coalition attacks on him, ever. France even announced publicly that they would veto any resolution authorizing force against Iraq, under any circumstances

So the UN "process" was going to protect Saddam and keep him in power. Absolutely, positively guarranteed by French and Russian veto power.

Now tell me again how we were supposed to work in that process. Do you really think that Jacques Chirac should retain veto power over US foreign policy? because that's what it amounts to.

I know you believe that Saddam was harmless unless it could be proved that he had ICBMs, but let's suppose for the sake of argument that he was not harmless. Let's suppose that US had good intelligence that encouraged by Al Qaeda's success, Saddam was financing them big-time (This is not a stretch, btw, as Saddam did give Zawahiri $300,000 in 1998), and was going to lend them a hand with weapons at the right time, in preparation for their next big strike. Let's suppose.

Do you think that this knowledge, even if absolutely proven to the French, would have changed their minds about supporting Saddam? You haven't looked at the TotalFinaElf contracts, in that case.
