This lesson is so obvious I don't know why so many miss it. A major power simply cannot ever, EVER allow itself to be defeated without future adverse consequences.

The terrorist attacks in Iraq today have, as their bases, our willingness to cut and run, first in Vietnam, later in Iran, then Beirut and finally in Mogadishu. We have established a pattern of abandoning difficult tasks when the going gets tough. While I have a great deal of confidence that Bush simply will not do it, I do think it makes the stakes particularly high should Bush not be reelected.
