One of the benefits of living in California use to be that you could send you kids to an excellent State funded University system.

In fact it used to be free for California resident to attend the University of California at Berkley; perhaps you remember that from when you went there.

In any case wealthy state tax payers are already paying for the state university system ever year when they write that big check to the state franchise tax board.
NY State taxpayers are not funding Yale University out of their state tax payments, so it is different in that way.

In a way the University of California is a bit of an entitlement program for California residents.

It reminds me of the "take-back" clause that Unions in the California grocery chains are fighting against. You are trying to take away something that was already settled.

You live in California and pay your taxes there and you expect to be able to send your kids to the UC system without getting gouged.
