Nadine re: France. France would have assumed that if there was something serious enough going on in Iraq to actually threaten the United States that both France and the United States would know about it, and that France would help the US know about it out of pure self-interest. The fact is there was no threat and everybody knew it -- including the US. As for Saddam being "innocent", he was nothing of the sort. But that was a matter for the UN and hence a unilateral invasion by the US made no sense at all to anyone. IF there have been both violation of UN resolutions AND a threat, then invading made sense. But without a threat, the UN was on course to deal with the situation.
