There are at least three elements of control: military, political and economic. Our military are being slaughtered and we want that to stop but cannot control the situation. We asked for help and did not get it because we would yield no political or economic control. At this stage it is water almost under the bridge as it is too late in the game to stop the loss of American life and the Bush administration has proven itself incapable of rallying international support. Now we will watch the killing go on while we wait to see if we can train Iraqis to shoulder the burden of policing our occupation. Only time will tell. But in the mean time, young Americans will be sent to Iraq and many will die. Most of the good opportunities were missed. Now it is a matter of making the "best" of a tragic set of circumstances.
