Communism lost, because it couldn't provide material prosperity

It did, however, produce some very decent weapons and armies, and Communist leaders had little hesitation to use them. If some very nasty wars and proxy wars had not been fought (for example, how did South Korea just 'happen' to remain non-Communist?), a great deal more of the world would have gone Communist, and Communism could have used that much more resources to prop its failures up longer.
