After 7% growth news, 48% approvals is horrendous.
All Bushies can do now is hope the Dems totally blow it and nominate Dean.

Released: November 05, 2003
Bush Job Performance Slips Again; Toss-up Against Generic Democrat; 49% Say Time for Someone New; Plurality Says War Not Worth the Lives Lost, New Zogby Poll Reveals

With less than a year to the Presidential election, likely voters remain divided on President George W. Bush’s job performance, with 48% saying it is excellent or good and 52% saying fair or poor. Earlier in September, the president’s job performance rating reached the lowest point since pre-Inauguration, with 45% positive and 54% negative, then bounced up slightly in late September polling.

Bush Job Performance Positive % Negative %

November 3-5, 2003 48 52
October 15-18, 2003 49 51
September 22-24, 2003 50 49
September 3-5, 2003 45 54
August 2003 52 48
July 2003 53 46
March 2003 54 45
September 2002 64 36
September 2001 82 17
August 2001 50 49
January 2001 42 36

The Zogby America telephone poll of 1,000 likely voters chosen at random was conducted November 3 – 5, and has a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percentage points. Error margins are higher in sub-groups.

A majority (53%) of respondents supports the Bush administration’s handling of the war in Iraq, while 44% are opposed. Nearly half (48%) say the effort in Iraq was not worth the lives that have been lost, while 43% feel it was worth it. Nine percent are not sure.

Overall opinion of Bush slipped slightly from September Zogby numbers. Fifth-five (55%) percent have a favorable opinion and 43% have an unfavorable opinion now, compared to 58% favorable and 41% unfavorable in September 22 - 24 polling.

When President Bush is matched against an unnamed (generic) Democratic contender, it’s a dead heat at 41% each. In September polling, Bush would have lost to a generic Democratic, 41% - 45%.

The President remains behind in his ‘re-elect’ numbers, where 43% of likely voters now say he deserves to be re-elected, while half (49%) say they think it is time for someone new. In early September polling, 52% said it was time for someone new, and just two in five (40%) said he deserves re-election.

Less than half (45%) think the US is headed in the right direction, while 48% feel it is on the wrong track.

Bush is rated higher by likely voters for his integrity (58% positive, 40% negative) and for his presidential leadership (54% positive, 45% negative) than for his handling of key issues. His performance on the Iraq war is 39% positive, 59% negative; the environment, 34% positive, 60% negative; healthcare, 28% positive, 67% negative; education, 39% positive, 56% negative; jobs and the economy, 34% positive, 65% negative; and the war on terrorism, 48% positive, 51% negative.
