That poll reflects a reality that Americans are ignoring.

It isn't just the Europeans who think that way. It's everyone. More and more, the relationship between the U.S. and the rest of the world, is resembling the relationship of Israel and the Arab world. There is a starkly different understanding of the world, little common ground, suspicion of all motives, no willingness to compromise and cooperate, a constant derision of the Other's culture, policies, and leaders. Read the European and Asian press; they think Bush is a madman. I exaggerate for effect, but it's not that big an exaggeration.

We have managed to alienate a group of crucial allies. Replacing France, Germany, and Japan, with India, Israel, and Russia, weakens our coalition. Complaining that they are fools (or worse) because they don't see the world the way we do, is not the way to bring them back into our coalition.
