Bad news for China's oil pipeline plans
By David Hsieh

BEIJING - The arrest of oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky and the state of Russian domestic politics may kill off China's hopes of tapping directly into Siberian oil reserves through a US$2.5 billion (S$4 billion) pipeline.

Chinese analysts expect the standoff between the Kremlin and Khodorkovsky to delay until next year Moscow's decision on a 2,400km pipeline which would feed 400,000 barrels a day to refineries in Daqing, in north-eastern Heilongjiang province.

They said Japan's bid to pipe oil from Angarsk in eastern Siberia via a longer, more expensive route to Russia's northern port of Nakhodka is looking more likely.
