WASHINGTON - Public support is slipping for President Bush (news - web sites)'s handling of the situation in Iraq (news - web sites), with 54 percent now disapproving of his performance on the post-war rebuilding of that country, according to a poll out Thursday. AP Photo Slideshow: Iraq Latest headlines: The CNN-USA Today-Gallup poll found that 45 percent approve of his handling of Iraq and 54 percent disapprove. In August, that same poll found 57 percent approving and 41 percent disapproving of Bush's performance on Iraq. The increasing skepticism about Iraq comes at a time the public's optimism about the economy is growing. The economy has been showing signs of strength lately, with increased growth and reductions in the number of unemployment insurance claims. The number of people who think the economy is in good shape increased from 21 percent in early September to 30 percent now and the number who think the economy is getting better increased from 40 percent in early September to 53 percent now. The public is divided on whether they approve of President Bush's handling of the economy, with 47 percent approving and 50 percent disapproving — a slight improvement from early September. Four in 10, 39 percent, said the United States made a mistake sending troops to Iraq, up from 23 percent who said that in March. Six in 10 said things are going badly for the United States in Iraq, double the number that felt that way in early June. Bush's overall job approval rating was 54 percent — a number that ranges from 50 percent to the mid 50s, depending on the poll. The poll of 1,007 adults was taken Nov. 3-5 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
