I think that if we get hit again in a way that can be attributed to inadequate security, the country will turn on Bush. A fooled-me-once type reaction. The first time they were angry at the terrorists. The next time, don't be so sure.

People were so fearful. Remember the anthrax thing? Maybe all that seems remote to you since the anthrax was here, not where you are. People have been reassured that, while there are still cracks here and there, we've taken care of the holes that permitted the first one. They have no right to be assured because if they were paying attention they would realize that nothing much has been done, and the WH hasn't claimed that we're prepared, but the public doesn't look deeply and tends to drift off. They think homeland defense is on top of things or getting there quickly.

I hope we don't have occasion to discover which of us is right.
