The other factor is that Louisiana is so conservative that the Dem candidate is just as conservative as Bobby.

There is that, though in the Mayor's and BOLD's case, there is little risk of Dem political retaliation for backing Jindal. What is a Dem governor going to do, retaliate against the Mayor of New Orleans and the huge block of Dem votes (68% of the city) he can sway simply because of one bit of disloyalty? If Blanco wins, she is no position to exact political revenge. If Jindal wins, particularly if he wins by a thin margin, he owes the Mayor and BOLD an enormous political debt that he pays off by making sure that N.O. does well at the State Legislature.

By betting on Jindal, the candidate most associated with much needed change, the Mayor took no huge political risks and burnished his image on the cheap. If Jindal wins, the payoff is huge; no big deal if he loses.

Though a newcomer to politics, the Mayor didn't just fall off the political turnip truck.
