The Russian economy was a disaster and Carter knew it -- as did any human who had a high school diploma. This is why Carter was so willing to engage them in Afghanistan and essentially had them withdraw. The Soviets had been a joke since the late 60's/early 70's. If it were not for their oil reserves in the 1970's (somewhat insulated from Arab Oil Embargo that disproportionately hurt the West)-- they would gone under back then. That is the only reason why they were able to maintain any semblance of order for next 10+ years. Ronny bailed out of Lebanon and invaded Grenada -- what a hellion! -JH
