But even if it's just an alumni group, why is it a good idea for it to be based on gender? I can see if there are programs that benefit ALL prospective students that would be a good thing.

It would be a good thing.

I remember back in the days when I was hunting for scholarships their were lists of them. Most of them were for some very specific characteristic or combination of characteristics, like a Croatian Catholic man who played baseball and wanted to study fish. I've talked before about setting up a scholarship for someone as a way to pay back for my having gone to college on full scholarship. I will get around to doing that at some point. And you can bet that I will pick someone who reminds me of me. It is a very natural thing to want to lend a hand to ease the struggle of someone like you who comes behind you. As long as those doing it at your school aren't also the decision makers on admittance, I think it's just fine. Perhaps you'd like to get some male alums together to volunteer their time to do it for male applicants. That would be a good thing to do and an opportunity for you to put your money where your mouth is.
