Ineffectiveness of intranasal zinc gluconate for prevention of experimental rhinovirus colds.

Turner RB.

Department of Pediatrics, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC, USA. rbt2n@virginia.edu

Zinc has generally been administered by the oral route in studies of prevention or treatment of the common cold. The purpose of these studies was to evaluate the effectiveness of intranasal zinc gluconate for prevention of experimental rhinovirus infection and illness. Ninety-one volunteers, 41 treated with active medication and 50 treated with placebo, received study medication for 3 days, were inoculated with rhinovirus, and then were treated with study medication for an additional 6 days. Rhinovirus infection was documented in 37 (74%) of the 50 placebo-treated volunteers and in 32 (78%) of the 41 volunteers treated with active medication. Zinc treatment had no effect on total symptom score, rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction, or the proportion of infected volunteers who developed clinical colds. These data do not support a role for intranasal zinc gluconate for prevention or treatment of the common cold.

ZINC NEITHER PREVENTS NOR TREATS COLDS

Gabe Mirkin, M.D.

A study from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, shows that zinc nasal sprays do not prevent or treat the common cold.

Zinc inhibits the growth of viruses that cause the common cold in a test tube. However, your body is different from a test tube. Cold viruses have persisted for millions of years because they adapt to live in the mucous membranes of human noses and throats, and therefore are passed from person to person through handshakes, sneezes and material. Your body defends itself by producing antibodies and white blood cells, but only after your immunity has been infected with each virus and it produces cells and proteins specific to kill each cold virus. At this time, nobody really knows if zinc lozenges or nasal sprays may be able to treat the common cold because the virus could respond to higher concentrations, different vehicles or more frequent use.

A randomized trial of zinc nasal spray for the treatment of upper
respiratory illness in adults.

Belongia EA, Berg R, Liu K.

Marshfield Medical Research Foundation and Marshfield Clinic, Marshfield,
Wisconsin 54449, USA.

PURPOSE: We performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
to evaluate the efficacy of 0.12% zinc sulfate nasal spray for reducing the
duration and severity of acute upper respiratory infections. SUBJECTS AND
METHODS: Patients with acute onset of upper respiratory illness of less than
24 hours' duration were eligible for the study. A nasopharyngeal swab was
obtained at the time of enrollment for viral culture. Participants were
randomly assigned to receive either 0.12% zinc sulfate or isotonic placebo
spray. The medication was administered as two inhalations in each nostril
four times a day. Each patient completed a diary card twice a day to record
oral temperature, symptoms, and adverse effects. Symptoms were scored as
absent (0), mild (1), moderate (2), or severe (3). RESULTS: One hundred
eighty-five subjects volunteered to participate, and 160 met the criteria
for enrollment. The median duration of all symptoms was 7 days in both
groups (P = 0.45), and the median duration of nasal symptoms was 6 days in
both groups (P= 0.12). After adjustment for baseline differences in
severity, patients receiving zinc had a significant reduction in the total
symptom score (P= 0.02) and the nasal symptom score (P= 0.02) on day 1, but
not on any of the other days. Adverse effects were mild and had no
significant association with the use of zinc. A respiratory virus was
identified in 9 of the 160 participants; 6 of these were rhinovirus.
CONCLUSION: A low concentration of zinc sulfate nasal spray had no effect on
the duration of the common cold.

One correspondent pointed me to a document (The Middle-Class Plague: Epidemic Polio and the Canadian State, 1936-1937) healthheritageresearch.com that mentions anosmia as a side effect of intranasal application of zinc sulfate in humans. It seems that Canadian researchers, back in the 1930's, experimented with the intranasal application of zinc sulfate as a prophylactic intended to prevent the polio virus from entering the brain through the olfactory neurons. The researchers expected the zinc solution to produce temporary anosmia, and not more than a quarter of the treated children reported having lost their sense of smell. Some of these children still had not regained their sense of smell months later. Whether they ever did I just do not know. One of the researchers tried the solution on himself and he also became anosmic. I really would like to know how long the anosmia in these children lasted. If you find a reference to this, please advise me."

Different? Zinc gluconate and zinc sulfate...hmm let's see...one is sulphur based and the other is glucose based Guess what they both have in common, Dan....Ionized Zinc. Divalent Ionized Zinc. The kind of zinc preparation that has historically damaged the olfactory receptors, especially when it's DOUBLE the percentage of the amount they used back in the 1930s.

Why cut your dog's balls off? Now there's zinc gluconate! That's
right. Now, there's Neutersol. Neutersol is the zinc gluconate way to
render your dog completely sterile! Once injected in to your dogs
testicles, (by an experienced homeopathic veternarian only) it's curtains for those kahunas! Experience total, complete and irreversible sterilization for your dog: All thanks to the miracle of zinc gluconate Neutersol.

neutersol.com

Results indicate that intratesticular injection of zinc gluconate
neutralized by arginine based on testicular width is an extremely
effective method for non-surgical sterilization of male puppies and
that it is safe regardless of age and breed of the animal.
==========================

Really??? Here's a great idea. Because of Davidson's Biopharmceutical Project Management background, experience and Diploma Mill PhD?MBA, Matrixx should pay Davidson some additional funds to look into it as a potential new Homeopathic Sterilization process for guys. And here's the good part. No safety research would be required! After all, it's zinc gluconate; one of the safest most effective ingredients known to man. And, no known side effects either; with the exception of tawdry typical male behavior such as roaming, crotch grabbing, marking, aggression, or mounting.

225. Anosmia due to inhalational zinc: a case report
C.A. DeCook and A.R. Hirsch*

Rush Medical College and *The Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, Chicago, IL, USA

A 47-year-old married white male with no past history of chemosensory difficulties experienced the sensation "as if a cold were coming on" and tiredness. No fever, rhinorrhea, nasal congestion, cough or malaise were present. To prevent the development of an upper respiratory tract infection. Zicam nasal inhaler was applied as per the manufacturer's specifications -- one application per nostril, with deliver of -250 mg of zinc per inhalation. He immediately experienced severed right perirobital pain and anosmia. The pain resolved in day, but the anosmia persisted. Despite treatment with Zithromax and Prednisone, the olfactory ability did not return, precipitating a visit to a chemosensory clinic 1 month later. At that time, olfactory testing demonstrated anosmia, with an UPSIT score of 20. Alcohol Sniff Test of 6 cm and olfactory threshold to Carbinol at an irritant level of >35 decismels in both nostrils. Isovaleric acid, 2.3-butanedione, pentadecalactone, phenylethyl alcohol and tetra-hydrothiphene were absent at 25 decismels. (sobutyl) isobutyrate and L-carvone were intact at 25 decismels. The patient never developed a cold, nor had any underlying illnesses which could account for the chemosensory deficits. Ionic zinc instilled directly on the olfactory epithelium appears to be the pathogen in this patient's smell loss. Given the above, further investigation of the olfacotry effects of the Zicam nasal inhaler is warranted.
