You are correct sir. We have bad policy coming from Bush and his cronies. You cannot foist your government on another people. Let them decide how to govern themselves. The longer we stay there the longer the resentment will build.

Self determination, is by definition organically produced from within. It can't be injected by bullets.

Look at our own history. The British tried to force the colonies to do their bidding, at the end of a gun. Look what happened. Even a gun is not enough to enforce tyranny. For the souls of men are not likely to withstand such, and they will go to war to preserve their sovranty.

A war of independence was not enough to settle things. We then had to fight a Civil War to decide the extent of state and federal rights and responsibilities. 600,000 men died in the Civil War. This was a war of ideals and about self determination.

How then are we going to make Iraq something other than what they want to be? It seems to me that the folks administering these ill fated policies are not very good students of history. Colonialism under every banner has failed, eventually. Rivers of blood spilled every time that one nation tries to enslave another.

I'm sure that there will be those that can argue that we are not occupiers of Iraq. That we are there to liberate them. If we are there to liberate, then we need to see progress to that end everyday. If that is the stated goal, then each action that the US takes should further the delivery of self determination to the Iraqi people. That will be how success is measured, by how quickly the Iraqi people will take matters into their own hands.

The further one can look back, the further one can see forward.
