There is actually some truth to that one. Kerry and Heinz (the only person I am aware of in U.S. history who has been the wife of not one but two U.S. Senators -- does anybody know of another person who fits that description?) did reportedly sign a prenup. However, Kerry's financial disclosures do list some property, including a Boston area home worth a reported $7 million, which are either jointly held or in the Senator's name. Most of the rest of the fortune is his wife's, which he has indicated he will not (legally cannot, it appears) tap into for the election.

Here is Kerry's financial disclosure statement filed last year:

What I find interesting is this statement from that same post by our friend American Spirit:

"Kerry has never been rich remember. Any man who chooses a poor wife over an equal rich one is just stupid."

If Kerry "has never been rich" it means he is not rich now (he does not have full access to the ketchup fortune). However, he does have access to real estate holdings and other assets exceeding $7 million dollars in value.

American Spirit has repeatedly derided President Bush's tax cuts for the "rich" and stated that it would be good policy to repeal those cuts to pay for the war or the deficit or unmet social spending needs or whatever. Since Kerry isn't (and has never been) "rich", I guess we can conclude that the tax cuts should not be repealed for people of Kerry's stature, with a six figure current income (it might be seven figure, I haven't checked the exact number, but the Senate salary alone is 6 figure) and assets in the millions. There are maybe a few hundred thousand people in the United States with more money than $7 million even if you exclude Mrs. Kerry's assets. So if he isn't "rich", then I guess there aren't very many people who got an undeserved "tax break for the rich" under President Bush.
