And, stating the obvious, birth-control--even tubal ligation and vasectomy--is not foolproof. Both have been known to fail, as have lesser methods of birth-control, especially condoms.

And, of course, the identical argument can be used to justify infanticide. After three months the couple finds that this baby is far more trouble than they expected, and much more expensive, and is interfering with their lives. So let them kill it off. As you say, "It isn't good social policy to punish people for their carelessness by making them raise children." So don't make them.
