In 1991 the FIS (Islamic Salvation Front) was formed in Algeria; this was the first terrorist organization formed within Algeria since the early 1960’s. The FIS’s military wing, The Islamic Salvation Army, made concessions to the existing Algerian government in 2000 and supposedly disbanded. Residual fighting remains. The FIS now continues the political fight to control the countrywithout the use of violence. The FIS represents the most conservative form of Islamic rule, similar to that of other conservative Islamic countries sucn as Iran. Algeria has to decide whether to be a moderate Islamic state like Morocco in the West or a or more mllitant Arab state like Libya in the East. Most population centers are closer to Morocco. Why was Algeria forced to create terrorist groups in the early 1960’s? Why was FIS formed in Algeria? Why did FIS disband its military wing, The Islamic Salvation Army? How would you describe the religious philosophy of FIS? How would Morocco react to a FIS takeover of Algeria? How would Libya react to a FIS takeover of Algeria? Lesson 12 The History and Causes of Iranian Terrorism Known as Persia until 1935; became an Islamic republic in 1979. Terrorist groups within Iran consolidated in the late 1970’s to combat the terrorist forces of the Shah of Iran. Westernization, which had occurred under the Shah, was then crushed by conservative Iranian Islamic Clerics. Terrorist activities spread to the United States in 1979 when it seized the US Embassy in Tehran. Iran fought a long costly war with Iraq from 1980-1988. The pace of Westernization remains a key issue today, as does reopening relations with the United States. Why did Iran have to form terrorist groups in the 1970’s? Why was Westernization crushed by the conservative Islamic clerics in 1979? Why did the takeover of the US embassy in 1979 have serious consequences for Iran? Why was the war that Iran had with Iraq important? Why is Westernization still an important issue in Iran today? Why are relations with the United States still important to Iran today? Lesson 13 The History and Causes of Iraqi Terrorism Iraq was formerly known as part of the Ottoman Empire until 193 Terrorist groups formed to overthrow Turkish influence. Republic formed in 1958 under various military leaders; in actuality a military dictatorship. Current miltiary dictator is Saddam Husayn; who favors Westernization. In the 1980’s fought a long indecisive war with Iran. Aided by the United States. In 1990 seized Kuwait, but expelled by the United States. Gross error by United States in 1991 was to allow Saddam Husayn to stay in power after defeating him in Gulf War. Iraq continues to ignore UN directives promised after losing Gulf War. Iraq is currently a major source of anti-US terrorism and a probable target for current US anti-terrorist war efforts. Why did Iraq form terrorist groups in the early 1930’s? How did forming a military dictatorship in the late 1950’s set a trend in Iraq? How did Saddam Husayn balance Westernization and conservative Islamic factions? Why did we aid Iraq in their war with Iran in the 1980’s? Why did Iraq try to seize Kuwait? Why did the United States make a serious mistake in Iraq in 1991? Why will the Untied States most likely have to go back to Iraq for a future confrontation? Lesson 14 The History and Causes of Libyan Terrorism Libya became a military dictatorship in 1969 under the leadership of Muammar Abu Minyar al Qadhafi. Utilizing successful terrorist tactics to achieve power in 1969, Qadhafi began to export terrorism to other Arab states like Egypt, Algeria and Palestine. The UN imposed sanctions on Libya in 1992, but oil is always in demand, so the sanctions had little effect. Some Mideast experts feel that Qadhafi and Libya are tied to many other terrorist groups in the area including those in Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt and Palestine Libya’s money is considered far more dangerous than it’s military. Libya is now considered a prime target for current United Stated anti-terrorist activities. Why is Libya considered an important Islamic country? What did Qadhafi from his takeover of Libya in 1969? How is Qashafi able to sidestep economic sanctions by the UN? Why have some other Islamic states in the Mideast copied the Libyan model? Why is Libya’s money more dangerous then its military? Why is Libya now a prime target for US attacks? Lesson 15 The History and Causes of Egyptian Terrorism Egypt became fully independent in 1945 following WW2. The assassination of Anwar Sadat was a result of terrorist funding from both the Muslim Brotherhood within Egypt and outside sources; most likely from Libya, Iraq or Afghanistan. The current leader of Egypt, Mubarak, succeeded Sadat after the assassination and now treads carefully between Westernization and the militant Islamic leaders within his country in the Muslim Brotherhood. The Muslim Brotherhood was formed in order to repel continuous Westernization within Egypt and to bring back traditional Islamic values. Murbarak may use the current policy of the United States as a means to rid himself of any serious Muslim Brotherhood threats within his country. The United States considers the Muslim Brotherhood within Egypt as a primary player in the World Trade Center attacks and will vigorously pursue all possible terrorist activity within Egypt with the assistance of Murbarak in the near future. Why was Anwar Sadat assassinated in Egypt? Who was primarily responsible for the assassination? How has Murbarak avoided the fate of Sadat? Why was the Muslim Brotherhood formed? How might Murbarak use the current status of United States anti-terrorist activity? Why has the United States targeted the Muslim Brotherhood within Egypt for anti-terrorist activity?
