The crowd is pretty much made up of local townspeople and has always been warm and friendly. This time, however, a few friends and myself positioned ourselves front and center in the audience for his speech. The national news media was off to the side of the stage so it could get both a good look at the crowd and at Bush. It turned out that our small circle of sign-holding protestors ended up changing the whole event. When the Bush parade, consisting of large municipal vehicles (firetrucks, etc.) came into town it stopped directly in front of the crowd. And, because of our signs, it never moved. Bush got out and gave a speech to a convoy of trucks instead of to a crowd of people--you see, everyone--our signs included--got blocked out from seeing him due to all of the vehicles in the way. Why did this happen this way? Because our small group of people were holding "BUSH-NORRIEGA" presidential campaign signs. Our action, of course, was meant as a reminder that Bush was once tight with Norriega, an American-friendly dictator, but had turned against him for political advantage--sort of similar to what recently happened with bogeyman Saddam Hussein. Anyway, our signs, when we early arrived at the event, were stapled on tall sticks and stuck out very clear for all to see, including the national media. But the secret service made us remove these signs from the sticks, claiming that the sticks were dangerous. Never mind the message! Thus, we had to hold them in our hands. But that was OK since, for the speech, we had positioned ourselves front and center. We thought, for sure, that the media would be able to pick up on our message. But this didn't happen because they left the fire strucks to obstruct our message. So Bush gave his speech, everyone strained their necks to try and see it. He quickly jumped back onto the fire truck to head to the next town for the next speech. Not needing our signs anymore, we were able to position them on several of the fire trucks as they rode out of town sporting "BUSH-NORREIGA" all the way. Call it a minor restriction on freedom, but still a small victory for those of us who didn't believe in Bush's policies. Oh, yeah. We saved one sign for the front lawn of Bush's Kennebunkport home, near the place where all of the tourists gather to take photographs. I always wondered who got a snapshot of that one--lol!
