Unfortunately the Confederate flag means something different to various groups of people, just as today's United States flag is viewed differently between Americans and say Iranians. There are plenty in the world when they look at the U.S. flag see the equivalent of a big Nazi Swastika. I believe that plenty of such perceptions are based on ignorance especially of all the myriad of details of past history rather than broad themes.
