Same here. Of course, we disagree about what the right thing to do is. BTW its good you're consistent in that you opposed the US getting involved in Serbia. Another thing I disagree on.

I know the UN is never going to bring about a peaceful, lawful, just world (note that it is doing nothing about Tibet nor will it) and therefore I don't want my country's actions bound by the deeply flawed institution that is the UN.

Rather we should be setting a good example

By setting a bad example with preemption we have changed the rhetoric. Other countries will feel justified, if not obliged by realpolitic to see if they can push the example even further. Same with breaking treaties. The U.S. under Bush has bought many years of chaos in international relations.
