The casting of the muscular Hasselhoff appears to be CBS’ calculated response to criticism that Mr. Reagan as played by Mr. Brolin seemed too passive and out-of-the-loop in the now-abandoned film. “In David Hasselhoff, you will be seeing a Ronald Reagan who is clearly an action-man,” said CBS Chairman Les Moonves, who screened for critics a scene in which Mr. Reagan rescues a drowning Newt Gingrich (Jim Belushi) from monstrous waves off the island of Maui. In another scene from the film, President Reagan and his wife Nancy (Kelly Ripa) save the earth from a deadly asteroid heading directly in its path. Right-wing critics of the Brolin film were wildly enthusiastic about the Hasselhoff version, brushing aside criticism that some of the events depicted in the film never occurred. “President Reagan definitely would have saved the earth from a deadly asteroid if the liberal Democrats in Congress had only let him,” said Bill O’Reilly of the Fox News Channel’s “O’Reilly Factor.” For its part, Fox News announced today that it would make a rare foray into entertainment programming by producing a miniseries about Barbra Streisand starring conservative pundit Ann Coulter as Ms. Streisand. While no airdate has been set, Fox executives said they hoped the Coulter film would be completed in time for next Halloween.borowitzreport.com
