Hi Ish; Re: "The premise was the population at large. [i.e. What about a case where 10% of the population support the resistance, and 90% hate it?]"

The world death rate statistics for Americans due to terror attacks is worst in Iraq, at around 300 per 100,000 per year. If you want to believe that 90% of the Iraqi population is against the perpetrators you can be my guest, but your assumption of that statistic bodes rather badly for our hopes of eliminating terrorism, LOL.

Polling in the rest of the Arab states show much higher than 10% support for Arab attacks against the US.

Hey, I saw the pictures of Palestinians celebrating the WTC attack. Didn't you? If you missed them, then check out the pictures showing the Arabs celebrating the next time they shoot down one of our helicopters.

The basic problem with Bush's logic is that it was based on the assumption that if the Iraqi people hated Saddam, then they couldn't possibly also hate him.

The simple fact is that these guys hate us, most of them, and the remainder, who don't actually hate us, don't have any great objection to watching us die.

Now that I think about it, I can recall sitting in a bar drinking a beer while the TV showed video images of Iraqi soldiers (or was it Taliban) being killed by remote control. The other people in the bar clapped and yelled. So did I.

Now think about that from the other side. Why would you expect them to have empathy for us when we don't have empathy for them? To them, our soldiers are just targets. To us, their soldiers are just targets. They're going to keep shooting at any targets we put up. We're going to keep shooting at any targets they put up.

War is very much simpler to understand if you don't, like the peacenik leftwing hollow-heads, run around assuming that everyone loves you. The simple fact is that even the ones that don't actually hate you, really aren't any more interested in us than a rubbernecker at a freeway accident.

I wouldn't object to people believing (like Barney) that 90% of the Iwaqis wuv us, except that it is killing our people, damaging our military, hurting our foreign policy, setting back the war on terror, and damaging the Republican Party.

We're in a tough situation. This is a time for tough thinking. That means realism, not hope.
