Really. I love how Friedman makes these acute observations, then fights shy of their natural conclusion, which in this case is, "I guess Oslo was a really dumb idea, then, right?"

Edit: this 'let them win' thinking was not far from Kissinger and Nixon's thinking in 1973, when they cut off the Israelis soon enough so that the Egyptians could persuade themselves they won a great victory (they really believe it), so they would have enough 'honor' to make peace. Did seem to partly work in that case. Of course, there has been no real peace, just a realization on the Egyptian's part that they could not afford another war; maybe peace would pay better?
