Undoubtedly economic sectionalism influenced the bad blood between North and South. But this was obviously not enough to cause secession and war. Even the 1832 Tariff over which the North and South struggled was not enough to cause secession. The Nullification Controversy concerned only the belief that certain federal laws could be ignored by states – and even this “nullification” was designed as a trial balloon to establish the Southern ability to nullify possible federal laws against slavery.

That the average Northerner didn’t have a problem with slavery is immaterial here. What is material is the fact that Lincoln was on record as being quite determined to halt slavery’s expansion. This was the issue over which the South broke Union.

We must always keep the facts in mind here and not get too carried away with the fantasies of neo-confederates like Chuckie Adams and Lew Rockwell. Lincoln did not free the slaves until well into the war because freeing the slaves was never his aim. Freeing slaves only became his aim when he saw that it could help preserve the Union. Lincoln’s initial purpose regarding slavery was ending its expansion.

If you will remember that, then the rest of the pre-Civil War history will make sense to you.

Your black nanny does not show how progressive the Segregated South was, sir. And it is truly baffling to me that you would even submit such a “proof.” It shows just how utterly detached some Southerners can be from the truth. Your nanny was your servant, however much you claim “love” for her.

To be impressive here, you need to be able to say that your father had a black wife or that your aunt had a black husband that everyone in your family and neighborhood accepted with no problem. Of course that is simply not something you can ever say here with integrity because we all know it was not true. It was certainly not true during the Civil War.
