We are "dealing" with them, we are simply choosing to deal with them in ways that don't work. Rather like dealing with unwanted pregnancies by making people keep babies- we did that, and it didn't work very well. I would not want to go back to those times. The best argument against laws outlawing abortion is that it's been tried, And it was awful, and there is evidence from the past that it was awful- but people forget, and people don't learn, and change, and change their models for the world. I think that's the real problem.
