To: Jim Fisher who wrote (58 ) 11/10/2003 2:44:28 PM From: marcos Read Replies (1) | Respond to of 271 Jim, the ABC is to Oz as the CBC is to Canada, and the BBC to Britain, they certainly do employ famous journalists and have won numerous awards, i would consider them as authoritative as any .... of course this doesn't mean that every word they publish is the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth, but they shouldn't be dismissed as unfounded either, imho .... here is that piece - abc.net.au First couple of things i notice about it [beyond the fact that it is an interesting collection of facts and opinion, a pretty good timepiece imho] - One, there is a lot more to the Galactic affair than posted here .... there were deep dark questions about the cost of clean-up, how bids on it were awarded, the way they went about it .... this from distant memory, can't recall detail, but it seemed quite possible that the Superfund got super-billed [and not the first nor last time for that, either] .... which doesn't excuse actions of RF by any means, he had backed himself into a corner by promising mine construction by a certain date, which meant building leach pads in winter when they couldn't be sealed as well, so that's how the leak happened .... also, they did in fact produce gold there, just not enough to survive the weak PoG of the day [this is all from memory, don't quote me please] Two, the whole Branch Energy and Diamondworks thing - if you look at the whole story in context, follow the situation in Sierra Leone before during and after BEL's actions, you may find it more difficult to come to the value judgment that this article sways you toward .... all mines of diamonds or gold need security guards, without them they'd get robbed blind .... from 1997 until recently, BEL was not involved, and the locals were doing considerable murder on each other, looting, whacking off arms, all proceeds from diamonds went for guns and drugs .... now the 'war' is over, Diamondworks is back in there, hundreds have jobs and dmw is repairing infrastructure, helping return order to the land .... i've followed dmw for years, and have a hard time seeing what they do there as evil, i hold quite a few shares now actually, of course it is a far different company than it was then, new management and business model, if RF is involved at all it will only be as holder of tiny percentage of shares [imho] Anyway, as far as Pluvia getting mileage out of that piece, i can't see it ... Friedland's big score with Diamond Fields pretty much eclipses the rest in public perception .... and maybe the notoriety of other stuff just works in his favour ... wasn't P saying he'd release something of substance on ie/ivan today? ... maybe after the close, eh .... cheers
