I can think of a time or two when I found myself in some fairly iffy situations.

One time in particular stands out.

Right after we got our little trailer Dusty, two girlfriends and I decided to go on a weekend camping trip. We had to wait until Friday afternoon to leave because one of them didn't get off work till then.

We headed out for a favorite campground that is quite a long drive from here.....about 4 hours. I was doing really well pulling Dusty and keeping things safe and straight while the two of them talked and laughed and drank beer.

It was a long haul and I was a bit tired but we finally reached our destination only to find the campground was full. After going to the bathroom in the middle of the road leading up to the campground (beer does that to you) and getting ourselves turned around, we found ourselves in the parking lot of the local High School. After discussing our dilemma, we decided to try a state campground that we had past some 30 miles down the road we'd just traveled.

On our way I noticed a National Forest campground sign that said; Deer Park-next right. I've always thought National Forest campgrounds are prettier than state campgrounds so I thought this would be much better. When I got to the next right, I took it.

We were driving along on a very rural road surrounded by mountain meadows and the occasional farm house. We passed beautiful fields of fire weed and the scenery of the far off mountain range was beautiful. About 10 miles in the road suddenly turned from pavement to dirt but it was still plenty wide and quite well maintained. Another 5-6 miles after that is when I began to suspect I might be in a bit of trouble. We came upon a sign that said; Deer Park 19 miles-Road not suitable for trailers. Well, Dusty is only 15' long and a nice little compact size, besides, there was absolutely no where to turn around........I was committed.

I drove on logging switchbacks with dust and ruts and blind, narrow curves for the entire 19 miles, all the while the girls encouraging me to carry on while they passed the beer.
