Here's a story for RWEs who complain that American Muslims...

"should" -- or "owe" you somehow to -- stand up and "say something" against Islamic terrorists.

The event was covered by the local Fox TV affiliate as well as CBS.

NEWS ADVISORY:

LOCAL CONVENIENCE STORE OWNERS PRESENT $10,000 CHECK TO
RED CROSS TO SUPPORT THE TROOPS

AUSTIN, TEXAS ¾ Over 250 local convenience store owners and their families, the majority of whom are Muslim immigrants from India and Pakistan, will present a $10,000 check to the American Red Cross for its Armed Forces Emergency Services program on Monday, November 10, at 10:30 a.m. on the south steps of the Capitol.

Special guests of honor Texas Secretary of State Geoff Connor, Austin Mayor Will Wynn and Brigadier General Darren Owens of the 49th Armored Division, Texas Army National Guard will join representatives from the Red Cross to recognize GAMA's contribution.

"The patriotism and generosity of the members of GAMA is deeply appreciated. Their concern for the families of United States Armed Forces is exemplified by this grassroots fundraising effort," said Ken Williams, CEO of the American Red Cross of Central Texas. "The collection cans in 250 GAMA stores gathered not only the nickels, dimes and dollars of our neighbors across Central Texas, but they also collected an expression of goodwill and pride in the men and women who protect our freedom around the world."

$4,761 was collected in the GAMA store canisters for the Red Cross. GAMA's members directly contributed the balance of the $10,000 donation.

"As American entrepreneurs on the front lines of small business, we see first-hand the warm generosity of Central Texans to support our troops who are fighting against terrorism around the world," said Abdul Patel, one of 10 volunteers who serve on the GAMA Board of Directors who owns and operates three convenience stores in Austin. "We wanted to express our appreciation of the liberties and benefits of this great nation, which is our home and country."

In December 2001, GAMA donated a total of $65,000 to the American Red Cross Liberty Fund, and $5,000 each to of five Central Texas public safety/law enforcement organizations: the Austin Police Department, the Travis County Sheriff's Department, the Williamson County Sheriff's Department, the Austin Fire Department, and the 100 Club of Central Texas, a non-profit organization dedicated to aiding families of Central Texas law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.
