KT,

Regarding education, IMHO it's all about two things.

1. Getting the best "value" for the buck - which IMO necessitates elements of competition and choice like we have at the university level. I could never send my child to the local public school, but few have my financial resources. Not sure how to implement that because vouchers also have a downside, but what we have now is a mess. The funding is there. The "value per dollar" is not.

2. Getting it through everyone's head that there is a difference between teaching tolerance and implying that tolerance means that all of life's possible choices produce equal results. Some choices produce easily measured better results both economically and socially. And I'm not preaching religion here. I am preaching the type of common sense that occurs after you reach an IQ of about 90.
