It is very sad and the finger should be pointed at both liberal and conservatives for messing it up. The 'no child left behind' sound bite has zero value beyond that.

Michael, I have two daughters. The oldest (a speech pathologist) gave teaching a try. She tried to stop a fight between two students (eight grade). The bigger one cold-cocked her right in the mouth. Four days after she filled out a report for the principle she was called in to fill out another. She asked why a second. He told her it was for the kid's parole officer. <NG> Kid had a rap sheet 1/2" thick.
Youngest daughter is an eight grade math teacher in an upper-class capacitated public school in Jupiter, FL. A few teachers that transferred there from a lower-class public school in West Palm said that there are more discipline problems in the Jupiter school than there were in the West Palm school.
Problems---
1. lack of parental involvement whether or not rich or poor, whether or not both parents working or, too rich to work.
2. parents sentiment = my little Johnnie wouldn't do that, must be the teacher, or, he's your problem while he's in your school.

You would be amazed at the stories I hear (ex-wife & her husband are also teachers). I find it almost incredible that anything is taught in our schools. Of course, the kids aren't being taught. Have you ever seen Leno, when he goes to college graduations and queries the graduates with questions like, "Where is Mexico?". Answer, "South America, I think."

Sorry for the rant.
