The comments followed a selloff Monday in shares of Bre-X Minerals Ltd. (BXMNF), the company that discovered the Busang deposit, sparked by Canadian newspaper reports.

As reported, Bre-X shares fell when its joint venture partner on the Busang project, Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (FCX, FCXA), said the first seven holes it drilled at Busang turned up "insignificant amounts of gold," compared with Bre-X claims of about 71 million ounces of gold.
