When the Candidate Comes Sweepin' Down the Plain
Lieberman Sings to Kick Off Campaign in Oklahoma

Thirty-one years after Richard Nixon employed his Southern Strategy, Joseph I. Lieberman is rolling out his Oklahoma Strategy.

The senator from Connecticut, a Democratic presidential candidate, is having a difficult time in the polls in Iowa and New Hampshire, so he is looking elsewhere for primary victories. Specifically, he is looking to the place where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain, where the waving wheat can sure smell sweet when the wind comes right behind the rain.

Lieberman unveiled the Oklahoma Strategy yesterday in Concord, N.H., where he sang a verse of the Rogers and Hammerstein classic as he prepared to travel to Sooner land, which holds its primary Feb. 3, a week after New Hampshire.

A bootleg recording of this theatrical moment has been obtained by The Washington Post. The Post played the recording for Lieberman spokesman Jano Cabrera, who responded: "Oh, God."

The recording starts with the verse that begins "Oklahoma! Ev'ry night my honey lamb and I." Lieberman warbled:

Sit alone and talk and watch a hawk

Makin' lazy circles in the sky.

"You don't want me to continue, do you?" the candidate asked. The audience did. Lieberman continued, in dramatic reading style:

We know we belong to the land

And the land we belong to is grand!

Lieberman, casting caution to the sweeping wind, resumed the melody with gusto:

So when we say

Yeeow! Ayipioeeay!

We're only sayin'

You're doin' fine, Oklahoma

Oklahoma O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A!

A laughing Lieberman told his audience, "See you in Oklahoma." And today, indeed, he is in Oklahoma. At last sighting, it was a beautiful morning and he was riding in the surrey with the fringe on top.
