That's what the peasants said in the 1100's, cut off from every source of real information, fed only lies, and preyed upon by anyone with a horse and a sword. If they survived the regular raids on their farms, they were lucky if they survived past 35 without crippling illness and children alive enough to keep going.

Yes, they survived, but no thanks to the Church/Gov't combine, which took over after the barbarians had plundered a weak, jellyfish Roman empire, destroying everything they could burn, loot, or melt down for ready cash.

The more I read of the times leading to the Dark Ages the more it seems like a prelude.

Here's the difference -- the worst Providence had to offer back then was the Black Plague. We have finally tipped the balance towards compartmentalized geniuses who can cobble up absolutely powerful pathogens, as they do what they're told unaware of the intended consequences. The stuff they are brewing now is the same Dark Ages Culture of Death, but with a twist of Armaggeddon.
