I guess I figured if the school and parents punished him, there must have been if not a witness, then maybe some admission on his part or some sort of verification beyond her accusation. Otherwise, wouldn't the parents have raised a ruckus right away?

You show an unusual ignorance of the contemporary school environment. Students have been punished for pointing a finger at another person and saying "bang bang." A student in our school got in trouble on Halloween because he brought a plastic toy sword to go with his costume. the current craze is bullying, which is defined as virtually anything which bothers another student. And I have read of a case where a student was suspended for loan (well, I suppose giving) another student a menstrual pad, since that was considered medical.

You're right, things have gone beyond absurd at times. But I can assure you that the word of the girl will be taken, period. And there is only the most minimal, if that, due process for school students.
