bummer....you're still here.... take this in: Our Commander in Chief has just proposed $ 8 7 BILLION ( yes, that's BILLION with a "B") of taxpayer dollars to rebuild Iraq. According to a TIME magazine article (Oct.6, 2003, Mission NOT Accomplished, "What Went Wrong?" page 35) President George W. Bush has just asked the US Congress for this money for the following: 1 Billion Dollars to train Iraqi Police and Firefighters. ( This is the same Administration who fought a 200 million dollar increase for AMERICA'S police and firefighters......translation,...... I deduct that Iraqi Fire/Police are worth 10 times our own???) 400 Million Dollars for two new jails. ( At a cost of $50,000 per inmate...........IN IRAQ) The US inmate costs an average of $28,000 per year......I guess the prisoners there are more valuable too..... 100 Million Dollars for an Iraqi witness protection program for 100 Iraqis and family who testify against former regime officials and terrorist suspects. ( Hell, for a million dollars, I'll testify against anybody......) 5.7 BILLION DOLLARS on electricity, including $1 BILLION to rehabilitate and replace the power infrastructure over several years. ( Compare spending $255 for every Iraqi with 71 CENTS a person spent on federally funded electricity work here at home ( Where the *&#@ was this proposal and funding when half our country was without electricity????) 2.1 BILLION DOLLARS to I M P O R T petroleum products and invest in oil infrastructure. It doesn't make sense for the world's second largest oil-producing nation to import the stuff ) WHAT????? !!!!!!!! 303 MILLION DOLLARS to repair railroads and rehabilitate three major airports and the Port of Umm Qasr near the Kuwaiti border. ( The port is already functioning) Cost of a medium size airport in the US: $ 10 million 150 MILLION DOLLARS for a new children's hospital ( Estimated costs are $700 Million) Current spending thus far by this Administration on Children's Hospitals in the US: $ 0 20 MILLION DOLLARS for Executive Job Training costing $10,000 per person for a 4 week class. ( for this amount we could put 400 people through Graduate School at Harvard University) And the icing on the cake ......... 1 MILLION DOLLARS to build a museum documenting the regime of Saddam Hussein. Pardon me if I seem like a zealot, but I can think of a LOT of stuff that WE could do with $87 Billion dollars...... ( Health care for EVERYONE, college tuition for millions, feed millions of our homeless for decades But HEY....why would we want to do THAT! When we can have casualties EVERY STINKIN DAY CC
