Gosh, X, to be thorough, I'm gonna have to get out my Merck Manual for this, but here's some preliminary stuff:

Do you remember the first toxic shock syndrome cases from the early 1980s? They were attributed to Rely brand tampons. I and many of my colleagues never bought into blaming that condition on one brand of tampon. Many of us went out and bought out the stores before Rely tampons were removed from the market. It is conceivable that Patterson could have used a tampon (contraindicated in her condition) rather than a pad for her bleeding. She could have had an inapparent, preexisting infection. She could have engaged in sexual intercourse, which also would be contraindicated. She could have had an allergic reaction to the drug. I could go on, but those are for starters.

BTW, I am still researching the possible necessities for "PBAs" as I promised Rambi I would do. It is not as easy as I thought it would be. I swear, the search engines are becoming politicized too.
