Donald Straszheim, former chief economist for Merrill Lynch, has spent one month a year in China for the past five years, to find the best investment opportunities. Below are his favorites. Also featured is a higher risk pick on China's increasing use of cell phones. PetroChina (PTR NYSE); Huaneng Power (HNP NYSE); China Mobile (CHL NYSE); China Petroleum (SNP NYSE); China Unicom (CHU NYSE); China Telecom (CHA NYSE) Donald Straszheim, Straszheim Global Advisors: "China is changing the world. There is a long way to go, but there is no turning back. In my opinion, the ADRs that are listed on the New York exchange are a reasonable way to invest. While investors need to remember that this is a developing economy with certain risks, I think investors will be all right if they stick with these large-cap, New York exchange-listed companies. "PetroChina is the third largest equity in all of Asia. It's a big oil and gas producer. China needs a lot of energy to continue its fast growth. Huaneng Power provides electric power, which is greatly needed in this rapidly growing market. Meanwhile, China Mobile is trading at a trailing price to earnings multiple of just 13. "The Chinese love their technology. They love the Internet. They love their cell phones. There is enormous growth potential in these areas. China Petroleum & Chemical has a $27 billion market cap. As its name implies, it's a big, broad Chinese oil and petrochemical company. China Unicom is a leading telecom company. While the stock price is up in the last year, it's way down from where it was several years ago. China Telecom is a big wire line telephone company, serving two-thirds of the most rapidly growing areas in China." UTStarcom (UTSI NASDAQ)abqtrib.com
