Its possible that they would still be less interested even with the same expectations but I think lower expectations are part of the problem. Tim, I don't know why the expectations would be lower. They certainly weren't for me going to school. Maybe the parents' focus on the girls is at the expense of the boys......I think you actually said that. I don't know.....all I can say is their study habits and sense of discipline is much different from the girls. In fact, some of the guys have started coming up to me and asking what I think the next tests will be like. They seem genuinely lost. However, one theme is fairly consistent.........they seem to be looking for ways to cut corners. An example......one professor gave out some T or F questions that might be on the exam. Of course, you have to look up the answers first........they are in the reading material which I guarantee you most of the guys are not bothering to do. In any case, this one guy came up to me and asked how I was studying. I told him. Then he told me that he planned to study only the questions that were false. The theory behind his approach is that if he didn't recognize the question, then it must be one with a True answer. First, its clear with this guy its all about the grade.......forget really learning anything. That was not surprising to me........but it was his need to cut as many corners as possible so that studying would be similarly reduced. These are first year courses, and the professors are feeding it to them like its pablum but they[the students] want it to be even easier still. I just told him whatever works for him, and let it go at that. I thought to say more but I figured there was not much point. The second part of this story is telling. At the end of our conversation, the guy told me his sister was in grad school. I think he said she was getting her Ph.D. Meanwhile this guy will be lucky if he gets his undergrad degree. So goes the story of the boys vs the girls. ted
