I have a true story to tell you of the "internet-run-amuck" when it comes to turning loose a listing on the internet, where anyone with a half-baked website is able to reproduce and publish information about a person's home. Not too long after NAR first hooked up with Homestore.com/Realtor.com, I entered a listing into my local MLS. After giving it the normal period of time to show up on Homestore/Realtor.com, I searched for it. It appeared on my monitor, complete with house photo and my name.......on the same page with a screaming yellow banner ad which said (in part, because I'm going to censor some of it).."XXXXXX IS GOING TO KICK YOUR AXXXXX!!! This was an ad for a video game. Almost fell out of my chair and prayed my seller and the owner of that house and all others I had listed were NOT surfing the internet that night. Right away, I emailed all my comrades on a Realtor/Broker discussion board and asked them to bombard NAR right then and there with a protest about this offensive advertising. They did so. Miraculously, some NAR top dogs were on the internet that same evening and picked up their email. They were concerned....which is putting it mildly. No more cheap ads like that now appear on Realtor.com, no matter how much Homestore or any other provider of the Realtor.com site may need or want to sell such ads for revenue. Can we say the same about all other random, tiny, cheap websites in operation out there today? Don't think so. And I do know that if I list a property, I darn well want to know where and under what type of banner advertising it is going to appear.
