Governor Signs Scripps Bill Into Law In Boca Raton

Governor Jeb Bush recently visited Boca Raton to sign legislation that provides the framework for the Scripps Research Institute to expand its operations from California into Palm Beach County.
Florida’s elected leaders join Governor Jeb Bush as he signs the $310 appropriations bill to clear the way for Scripps Research Institute to expand their operations into Palm Beach County. Commissioner Karen T. Marcus, Chair of the Board of County Commissioners, looks on at the right of the Governor.
The bill represents $310 million in stimulus funding to help the biotech foundation establish its start-up efforts for the Scripps Florida campus over the next seven years.

Palm Beach County has already committed $200 million to build the new research park and also provide temporary laboratory facilities within six months. The Scripps facilities will likely be located on the Mecca Farms property in northern Palm Beach County near the Acreage.

The Scripps Research Institute is expected to create more than 500 high-wage, high-tech biomedical jobs in the first seven years and around 3,000 jobs within 15 years, not counting several thousand more anticipated “spin-off” jobs as pharmaceutical firms and other related industries relocate to Palm Beach County.
