And I have met so many Christians who feel the same way about Christianity. The problem is not the call for spread of the religion but the methods they may be advocating.

Oh yes. Armchair political theorizing, very often, is likely to mislead both the writer and the reader. Many, many posts here reflect not much more then the author's biases, wishes and fantasies - and their talent to articulate them. For an intelligent person there is nothing easier then to come to believe their own rhetoric.

Why not spend a few minutes and listen to the players themselves? This article is one of such opportunities. Another one - and I have still not seen a better introduction to the thinking of Islamic extremists - is this "review" of the work by Sayyid Qutb:
