You might have it slightly backwards - Gold would reach $400 if the USD were a bit more hammered. It wouldn't hammer the USD because it reached $400.

Price of gold is quoted in USDs. It is only natural that it would go up as USD falls against other currencies. That doesn't mean investing in gold is a good idea.
