I am taking a college course in the history of Islamic civilization. It is astonishing what a complicated and rich topic this is. You can't begin to grasp it all even with years of study. This is a thousand year old civilization with enduring trends that were modulated but not defeated by the advent of Islam. What I am beginning to grasp is that there is nothing in this civilization fundamentally antithetical to democratic institutions. The people are in many ways natural democrats. I don't minimize the magnitude of the task ahead as we attempt help these people free themselves from centuries of oppressive governments. I can't even identify all of the impediments. I do know enough to know that it is NOT a fools errand. It IS doable. It is WORTH trying. And it is in our own interests to try.
