Drugs on the Run
11/13/03 01:37 PM ET

Drug stocks are rallying today. I've asked sources smarter than I for an explanation and I've received a variety of responses.

"Very stupid people."

"Rotation into the drugs in anticipation of higher interest rates, and a technical bottom."

"Riding on Pfizer's coattails, plus rotation out of retails like WMT, TGT into more stable names."

"Medicare reform is very close. Market looking for an excuse to rally these guys."

none

By the way, the news on Pfizer's Lipitor actually reducing EXISTING aterial plagck (instead of just slowing /stopping build up, which is what statins are expecte to do) is really good news for the whole industry.

Add this to the new drug coated stents, new info on diets & exercise for cholesterol control, new info on apspirin and NSAIDS reducing inflamation, more powerful statistical informaiton on blood presure effects, the spread of automatic defrilbulators, early detection with C-reactive proteins -

There is enough technology and information to make a massive reduction in heart attack rates - enough to effect life expectancy and possibly alter demographics.
