I remember a supposedly true story several years back about a group that did the math and figured it was time to buy all the numbers. Their big fear was, as you said, that too many people would pick the winning number. But they did the odds calculations and took a shot at it. The knew how many tickets a machine could spit out an hour and sent people to different locations to buy the tickets. Took a huge effort to cover all the numbers as you can imagine. Suspense came when one of the machines broke down and a large gap was left in their numbers. They ended up winning, but if I remember right it wasn't a huge win maybe 3-4 times what they invested. I don't think they ever did it again. Too damn scary and too much of a chance that something would go wrong.
